George R Brown Convention Center
The George R Brown Convention Center is Houston's Convention Center. The Center was named after George R. Brown and interesting figure in Houston. Prior to becoming an entrepeneur, George Brown was a minor and was injured, therefore decided to come to Houston to work with his brother. In 1942, George started the Brown Shipbuilding Company on the Houston Ship Channel. With his brother, Brown later started the Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation and later became a Director at Halliburton Company along with many other companies. He was always very charitable in all of his endeavors.
Since it's opening in 1987, there have been a number of renovations along with skywalks built between the Hilton Americas Houston. The Convention Center is also just off the Eastex Freeway which makes it easy to visit. The Toyota Center is two blocks from the convention center and Minute Maid Park is 3 blocks away.
There is sufficient parking available in the area with a 1600 space parking garage located at the corner of Polk Street and Avenida de las Americas. There are also several private parking lots near the convention center.
The George R. Brown Convention Center is the home to numerous conventions. Prior to the opening of the Hilton in Houston, there were always problems for large conventions in the Houston area as there was not enough hotel space in the area.
